Our population bears the living consequences of the epidemics of all kinds that have devastated it. Indeed, the danger is exposed in the camp of some families from the five towns in the area of “Cahos”, 6th commune, Little River of Artibonite, where the members of these families are out of breath due to an epidemic of “chique”: It is a parasitic skin disease caused by the female chique flea (penetrating tungosis) that is embedded under the skin, usually at the foot level. Ectoparasitosis is associated with poverty in this community. News comes in about individuals suffering from a major infection: the loss of toenails. This infection can reach tetanus, it is characterized by walking barefoot in the infected area. With this initiative, our goal is to promote good opportunities for the people who need it most.
This area offers a very attractive landscape due to its biodiversity and its vegetation cover. Agriculture (cultivation and livestock) is the main economic activity in this area, which barely provides food to the population of these regions. Unfortunately, the road infrastructure and basic social services are precarious. At GROFODEM we are dedicated to intensifying our efforts to solve this problem. Help is not easy at all, however with cooperation and community empowerment, we believe we can facilitate progress in this area. We always strive to make a difference, because agriculture is the largest source of income in the community, and so we invite you to learn more and participate.
